Here's what the research shows:
Heart Disease: Diets high in processed food and sugar raise inflammation, raise bad (LDL) cholesterol, and damage blood vessels-all things that make heart disease more likely. New research shows people who eat processed foods have a much higher risk of heart problems.
Type 2 Diabetes: Diets high in processed food and sugar cause fast "spikes" in blood sugar, and resulting insulin spikes. Over time, this makes your body less able to handle sugar, which greatly increases the risk of diabetes.
Cancer: Many studies now show that eating a lot of ultra-processed foods and added sugars can raise the cause of certain cancers. Processed foods cause inflammation, which creates an environment where cancer cells can grow more easily. Constant high blood sugar has also been shown to feed unhealthy cell growth. High blood sugar also causes our body to secrete more insulin, which has been linked to a higher risk of colon cancer and breast cancer.
